Founding BoardHelp us build this properly.
We're a brand-new nonprofit assembling our founding board. If you have judgment, a network, or a skill we're missing — we'd like to talk to you.
What we're looking for
Our Articles of Incorporation put management of the corporation in the hands of a board of directors. Right now that board is being built from nothing — which means the people who step up now genuinely shape what this becomes.
You do not have to be a veteran. You do have to care about the mission and be willing to actually do the work.
Skills we'd especially like
- Nonprofit finance or accounting — books, budgets, and the Form 990 when it comes
- Fundraising & grants — especially anyone who has run a gala before
- Legal or governance — bylaws, compliance, risk, participant waivers
- Veteran services — people who know the landscape and the other organizations
- The outdoors — guides and outfitters who can safely run a day on the ice or in the field
- Community & connections — you know everybody, and everybody takes your call
What a director actually does here
Sets the direction, keeps us honest with the money, opens doors, and shows up. Early on it will also mean rolling up sleeves — hauling gear, driving, cooking, sitting with someone who came alone.
What we can't tell you yet. We're not going to invent specifics we haven't decided. The bylaws are still being written, so board size, term lengths and meeting cadence aren't fixed — and honestly, the first directors will help decide them. What we can promise: it's unpaid, it's real work, and it's the ground floor.
Put your name forward
No formal application, no committee, no hoops. Tell Joel who you are and what you'd bring, and he'll buy you a coffee and talk it through.
The first people at the table decide what the table is.
